The problem

Since late August, Indian founders have heard that "ChatGPT ads are here." But can you sign up, what does it cost, and is your category allowed? This guide sticks to what OpenAI has published.

The short answer

ChatGPT ads are available in India, for users and for advertisers. Ads appear below ChatGPT's answers for Free and Go users, and Indian businesses can buy them through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager.
The catch is eligibility. OpenAI's ad policies limit ads outside the US mainly to consumer categories, so many Indian fintech, healthcare and legal businesses can't advertise yet.

When did ChatGPT ads launch in India?

OpenAI announced on 27 August 2026 that it would start showing ads to Free and Go users in India, as reported by TechCrunch. It named WPP and Omnicom as its first agency partners in India, said the arrangement is non-exclusive, and said more than 50 brands planned to go live that week.
Self-serve access followed. OpenAI's India announcement, as published by Storyboard18, said self-serve Ads Manager would open in India on 4 September. Separately, on 31 August 2026, OpenAI's global update listed India among the markets where advertisers can buy ChatGPT ads directly through Ads Manager.
As of 17 September 2026, OpenAI's Help Center lists India as "Available" for self-service.

Who sees ChatGPT ads in India?

ChatGPT ads in India can appear for adults on the Free and Go plans. ChatGPT Go is OpenAI's low-cost paid plan, which it first launched in India in August 2025.
Based on OpenAI's Help Center, these users do not see ads:
  • Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers
  • Accounts identified as belonging to people under 18
  • Free users who switch to the Ads-Free option, which comes with fewer messages and fewer tools
  • Anyone using a Temporary Chat
The audience is large. OpenAI said in February 2026 that India had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, according to TechCrunch, though not all of them are on ad-supported plans.

Can any Indian business sign up for ChatGPT Ads Manager?

An Indian business can sign up for self-serve Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, as long as it meets OpenAI's rules. Three requirements matter most:
  1. Your billing entity must be in India. OpenAI's Help Center says the legal entity that advertises and gets billed must be based in an available country.
  2. Your card should match your country. OpenAI says billing details and the payment method should match the business entity and country used to create the account. A card from another country may not be accepted.
  3. Your business and ads must pass review. OpenAI checks each advertiser, ad and landing page before ads can run.
  4. Expect to start in India only. OpenAI's campaign guide says some new self-serve accounts can only advertise in their home country at first.
Our step-by-step setup guide walks through the whole process.
Billing is postpaid. You add a billing profile and a credit card, and OpenAI charges the card when your unpaid spend reaches a set threshold, or at month end. You can add a tax ID in billing settings, but the types available depend on your billing country, so check which ones your account shows.
A practical tip: make sure OpenAI can load your landing page. Its ad policies say ads or pages its review tools can't evaluate are not eligible to run.

What does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT in India?

There is no fixed price. You set a budget and a bid. OpenAI's campaign guide lists the minimum daily budget for INR accounts as ₹725, the same figure it gave at the India launch.
You can buy in three ways (our ChatGPT ads pricing guide covers each in detail):
  • Views (CPM): you pay per 1,000 times your ad is shown.
  • Clicks (CPC): you pay each time someone clicks.
  • Conversions: the platform aims for an action like a purchase or lead, but you are still billed per click or per 1,000 views. This option is only for eligible advertisers.
One detail catches people out. A daily budget is an average over seven days. On a single day, spend can reach twice your daily budget, but over the week it won't go above seven times it.
OpenAI doesn't publish standard click or view rates for India in the pages we reviewed, so treat rupee CPC or CPM figures online as unverified.

Which Indian businesses can advertise on ChatGPT, and which can't?

This is the most important section for Indian businesses. OpenAI's ad policies (updated 10 September 2026) say that for now, ads mainly cover consumer categories.
StatusCategories
Mainly allowedHousehold and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, digital products and education
Generally not allowed outside the USFinancial services, health services, legal services
Not allowedPolitical ads, gambling and real-money betting, alcohol and tobacco, adult content, recreational drugs
RestrictedIndividual job or property listings (platforms can advertise if the ad doesn't feature a specific listing)
So an Indian D2C brand, online course, travel company or home services business can consider ChatGPT ads now. A lender, insurer, clinic or law firm generally can't under current rules. Wellness brands can run ads only if they make no unproven health claims.
OpenAI says these categories may expand over time, so recheck the policy page before deciding.

Will ChatGPT ads show in Indian languages?

OpenAI's Help Center says an ad's language can be chosen using the user's location, language settings and conversation language, and may differ from the language of the chat. It doesn't list which Indian languages are supported in the pages we reviewed.
On 16 September 2026, OpenAI also announced optional ad text customisation that can translate copy into the user's preferred language. Check whether your Ads Manager account offers it before relying on it.

Is there anything extra for Indian Shopify stores?

OpenAI said its ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify launches in all ChatGPT Ads markets on 23 September 2026, so Indian Shopify stores should be able to connect their catalogue from then. Confirm in the Shopify App Store.

How should an Indian business get started?

Start small and measured. Using the Uptrix 5S™ framework, the first two stages matter most here:
  • Scan: confirm your category is allowed, your entity and card are Indian, and your landing page loads cleanly.
  • Strategy: pick one goal and one number, such as cost per lead, and compare it with what Google or Meta costs you today.
Then set up tracking, launch a small test, and judge it on real results.

What Uptrix Technologies believes about this

We think India is one of the most interesting ChatGPT ads markets right now: a big audience and a new channel. But being early only helps if you're eligible and set up to measure. For Indian businesses in allowed categories, a small, tracked test is worth running. For those in finance, health or legal services, the better move today is to make sure ChatGPT's organic answers describe your business well through AI search optimisation, and compare your paid options in our ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads guide.

Conclusion

ChatGPT ads are live in India, and Indian businesses can self-serve with small daily budgets. Eligibility is the real filter, so check OpenAI's ad policies first.
